‘COLOMBIA’
A cybershot photography series during a three month visit to Medellin, Colombia.
During this three month period I tried to photograph on a small cybershot in black and white, barely in color. The results were tender photographs, some failed yet compulsive and interesting examples of making the system work. The following were the last two pictures I took, before it shut down completely on the heights of Medellin’s valley, on my way to the airport with my father.
Downtown Medellin.
Then a morning, in a finca. I seemed to only be able to talk with two young kittens, and my bed.
My dreams were stronger than the city. I was not protected. Respect was only for the hesitant and civil:
“indígena,
indigente”.
Dreams went on.

“dear doctor M, maybe you don’t remember me, you being such a big star now, but i remember you! i love your career! i have been following it, and i know all your lines. well you stay up late, you go to bars, you see too many movies, you don’t write to me at all! what do i do now? i am lonely out of my mind! is there a cure? sometimes during after-hours — for fun and no other reason — i fantasise about my blood pouring outwards, an inexhaustible current of red that spread and spreads and spreads until it eventually seeps into every corner of the — all over the world! — signed, Shadow & Myself”
One meaning of the word “monster” is a creature who is entirely self-dependent. In response to the theme of “Third Skin” the episode deals with some of the troubles that plague the linguistic animal, who is constantly in danger of overreaching itself and bringing itself to nothing (in contrast to other mammals, who organise an environment for themselves that does not stretch much beyond their bodies). Loosely based on Cookie Mueller’s advice column, and anchored in personal experiences of isolation and exhaustion, the film follows a protagonist roleplaying the onset and possible resolutions of a health crisis.
P.S. from the curatorial team: works that Masha presented at the Graduation show, stuck in our mind as absorbing and at times repulsive imagery puzzled with words so direct, they get under your skin and make you speechless. We held our breath waiting for Masha’s revealing take on our theme.

IN CONVERSATION WITH THE BEAST
Multidisciplinary: Performance, Photography & Mixed-Media Art Direction
In Conversation With The Beast came as a concept of conflict: confrontation, trauma and liberation. The characters which by fate are chained to each other, must confront each other at once through these three stages. This performance calls to tend and attend to the vital restorative forces that are used and unused. While using a a somewhat daring approach to step into the spectator’s personal space and mind with familiar sounds and calls of despair, this performance attempts to connect them to the perception of emotional and physical pain and universal and/or familiar trauma.
Through the physical combat of these pure archetypes, the guardian in white, symbol of confrontation and freedom, takes the traumatized and enraged inner self, symbol of death and transformation to a lighter space of patience and sentience. This performance was developed, directed and desgined by Ursula Marcussen and myself.
The photographs are a parallel connection to the performance as a kindred, positive aspect in the acceptance of expressing aggressive energy seeking with curiosity the poetic and the child-like self.
